Tennis Tournament Bracket Generator

A club tennis tournament is a knockout, and the reason is court time rather than tradition. A best of three sets match takes over an hour, so sixteen players in a round robin would be a hundred and twenty matches and most of a summer. The same sixteen in a single elimination is fifteen matches over four rounds, which fits a weekend on four courts.

What club tournaments add is somewhere for the first round losers to go. A consolation draw, also called a back draw or a plate, is a second bracket made up of the players knocked out in round one, so nobody drives to the club for fifty minutes of tennis. This tool draws one bracket at a time, so run the consolation as a second draw with those players entered into it.

Which format to run

Single elimination with a third place play-off for a club championship of sixteen or thirty two. Round robin only for a box league of four to six players, where guaranteed matches are the whole point. Double elimination is rare in tennis and roughly doubles the court time.

Opening round by seed

Seeds are paired so the strongest and weakest meet first, which keeps the top seeds in opposite halves of the draw. This is the order the board is drawn in, top to bottom.

How long it takes

Rounds run one after another, because a round cannot start until the one feeding it has finished. Matches inside a round can all run at once, so the number of courts you have decides the day more than the number of entrants does.

Questions

How do you seed a 16 player tennis draw?
Type the players strongest first. Seeds 1 and 2 land at opposite ends and can only meet in the final, with the rest spread so the strongest players are kept apart as long as possible.
What is a consolation draw in tennis?
A second bracket for the players knocked out in the first round, so a long trip is not one short match. Draw it here as a separate tournament with those players as the entrants.
How long does a 16 player tennis tournament take?
Fifteen matches over four rounds. At seventy five minutes a match on four courts that is roughly a weekend, with the first round taking two slots on its own.
