7 Team Single Elimination Bracket

Loading…

Seven is the friendliest of the odd sizes. An eight slot bracket leaves exactly one empty place, so seed 1 takes the bye and the remaining six all play in the first round. Only one team gets an easier route, which is as close to fair as a knockout of seven can be.

Six matches decide it, over three rounds. That makes seven a good size for an afternoon: small enough to run on one pitch or table without the day dragging, and large enough that the final feels earned rather than stumbled into.

Opening round by seed

Seeds are paired so the strongest and weakest meet first, which keeps the top seeds in opposite halves of the draw. This is the order the board is drawn in, top to bottom.

Why there is a bye

A knockout bracket has to halve cleanly every round, so it is built at the next power of two above the field. 7 entrants are drawn into a 8 slot bracket, which leaves 1 slot empty. Those go to the top seeds, so seed 1 sits out the opening round and enters in round two. If you would rather the byes fell at random, shuffle the seeds before generating.

How long it takes

Rounds run one after another, because a round cannot start until the one feeding it has finished. Matches inside a round can all run at once, so the number of courts you have decides the day more than the number of entrants does.

Questions

How many matches in a 7 team single elimination bracket?
Six: three in the first round, two semi-finals and the final. Adding a third place play-off makes it seven.
Who gets the bye in a 7 team bracket?
Seed 1, and only seed 1. An eight slot bracket has one empty place, so the top seed goes straight to the semi-finals and everybody else starts in round one.
Is a 7 team bracket fair?
As fair as an odd number gets. Exactly one team plays one fewer match, the smallest advantage a bye can give. Shuffle the seeds if you would rather it fell at random.
