Magic The Gathering Top 8 Bracket Generator

Loading…

A Magic tournament is Swiss rounds first and a bracket second. Everybody plays a fixed number of rounds against opponents on a similar record, and the top eight of the standings then play a single elimination cut to decide the event. This page draws that cut. It does not pair the Swiss, and no page here does.

Seeding the top eight is not optional the way it is at a casual event. The standings order decides who plays whom: first seed meets eighth, second meets seventh, third meets sixth and fourth meets fifth. Type the eight players in standings order with first place at the top, and the draw comes out exactly right.

Which format to run

Single elimination of eight, seeded by Swiss standings, which is the cut every Magic event uses. This tool does not produce Swiss pairings, so run those in your store software and bring the top eight here.

Opening round by seed

Seeds are paired so the strongest and weakest meet first, which keeps the top seeds in opposite halves of the draw. This is the order the board is drawn in, top to bottom.

How long it takes

Rounds run one after another, because a round cannot start until the one feeding it has finished. Matches inside a round can all run at once, so the number of tables you have decides the day more than the number of entrants does.

Questions

Does this generate Swiss pairings for Magic?
No. It draws the top 8 cut, which is a single elimination bracket. Swiss pairings are recalculated each round from current records and need dedicated event software.
How is an MTG top 8 seeded?
By Swiss standings. First seed plays eighth, second plays seventh, third plays sixth and fourth plays fifth. Type the players in standings order and the draw matches that.
How long does a top 8 take?
Three rounds of best of three matches at roughly fifty minutes each, so about three hours once deck checks and the breaks between rounds are counted.
