4 Team Double Elimination Bracket

Loading…

Four teams in double elimination is six matches: two in the winners bracket, the winners final, two in the losers bracket, and the grand final. Every team is guaranteed at least two matches, and the whole thing runs in about the time a six team round robin would take.

It is the smallest double elimination that behaves properly. With three teams the losers bracket barely exists, and with two there is no bracket at all. At four the structure is complete, which makes it a good default for a small event where one loss should not end somebody afternoon.

Opening round by seed

Seeds are paired so the strongest and weakest meet first, which keeps the top seeds in opposite halves of the draw. This is the order the board is drawn in, top to bottom.

How long it takes

Rounds run one after another, because a round cannot start until the one feeding it has finished. Matches inside a round can all run at once, so the number of courts you have decides the day more than the number of entrants does.

Questions

How many matches in a 4 team double elimination bracket?
Six. Two opening matches, the winners final, two losers bracket matches and the grand final. Every team plays at least twice.
Is double elimination worth it for only 4 teams?
Usually yes. It costs three extra matches over a knockout and guarantees everybody a second game, which for a four team event is the difference between an afternoon and twenty minutes.
What is the minimum field for double elimination?
Three entrants technically, but four is the smallest field where the losers bracket is a real bracket rather than one extra match.
