Fighting Game Tournament Bracket Generator

Loading…

Double elimination is not a preference in the fighting game community, it is the rule. Sets are short, matchups swing hard, and one set is a poor read on who is better, so every event from a weekly local upwards runs winners and losers brackets and expects every entrant to get at least two sets out of their entry fee.

The conventions layered on top of the bracket matter as much as the bracket itself: best of three until top eight and best of five after, the loser of the previous game may switch character while the winner may not, and stage striking where the game has stages. None of that is drawn here, so write it on the sheet beside the bracket.

Which format to run

Double elimination, always. Pools into a top eight once you pass thirty two entrants, which is what every local does. Single elimination only ever happens when a venue is about to close.

Opening round by seed

Seeds are paired so the strongest and weakest meet first, which keeps the top seeds in opposite halves of the draw. This is the order the board is drawn in, top to bottom.

How long it takes

Rounds run one after another, because a round cannot start until the one feeding it has finished. Matches inside a round can all run at once, so the number of setups you have decides the day more than the number of entrants does.

Questions

Why do fighting game tournaments use double elimination?
Because sets are short and matchups swing results, so one loss is a poor measure of who is better. Winners and losers brackets guarantee every entrant at least two sets.
How many setups do I need for 16 players?
Four is comfortable. Sixteen entrants in double elimination is thirty sets, which at ten minutes a set on four setups is about ninety minutes of play.
Does this handle a bracket reset?
The grand final is drawn as one set. If the losers bracket player wins it and your ruleset calls for a reset, play the second set and record whoever wins overall.
